Making of - 11 Faced Avalokiteshvara

(Avalo... what?)

Avalokiteshvara. No chinês, Guanyin e japonês Kannon (観音).

(yes! He's the one that Yakuza guys tattooed on their backs!)

I wanted to make a guide about how pastel painting works, and on this time I made some pics of the process. I'm a Shinnyo-en practitioner, and although I have a buddhist master that is also a great artist, it's hard to don't get inspired on his works. I've painted another buddhist figures, but I took a while to paint Avalokiteshvara. Why? Because there're trillions of different manifestations. But once the manifestation that we use on Shinnyo-en is the Eleven Faced Avalokiteshvara, I tried to google it.

With the base figure chosen, the next step was making some roughs. The base rough is bellow, where I already had draw where would be placed the shadows, the background and the elements positions.

It's important making this rough to have some base to paint later. This drawing is basically to guide you through the painting, not just when you're making the borders, but also while painting. After this, with a red chalk pencil, I drew the basic lines at canvas, without shadowing it.

Paint it from the background to the foreground. From the light tones to the dark tones. I recommend you that all details using the white chalk, leave it to the end. The white pastel often gets bleached, becoming weaker with time if you don't use the fixative varnish. Let's watch the whole process:

Uhul! O resultado final ficou assim:

Woohoo! All the last details (like eyes, etc) I drew it with colored pencils. I have a regular 12-colors pastel box, and a good advantage is this, mixing the tones until you get what you need. I'm already used to it, and is also a good challenge making those color blending more smoothly. The final result is this one:
